Politician. Charles Seymour was the 6th Duke of Somerset, born 1662, and died 1743. Somerset was a politician, Speaker of the House of Lords in 1690; he had supported William of Orange in 1688. He won, with his wife, Elizabeth Percy, the confidence of Queen Anne. He lost his place in Council in 1711, and was reinstated until 1716. He was also a member of the Kit-Cat Club. Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston (1648-1695), was a British politician and diplomat. In 1675, he was elected MP for Cockermouth, Cumberland. In 1682 he became envoy extraordinary to the court of France. Preston returned to England at the accession of James II. In 1685 he was again elected MP for Cumberland; sworn a member of the privy council; and became chancellor to the queen-dowager. In 1687 he was made Lord Lieutenant of Cumberland and Westmoreland.
